Street dogs are currently attacking people across the country. Many, from small children to the elderly, are being severely injured after falling victim to these dogs, and in some cases, even losing their lives. Against this backdrop, a group of engineering students from Kerala has come up with an innovative idea. They are developing a brand-new smartwatch designed to protect people from street dog attacks.
Chengannur students’ innovative experiment
A team of students from St. Thomas College of Engineering and Technology in Chengannur, Kerala, is developing this smartwatch. The project has now reached its final stage. The students have named this watch prototype “Sense-K9.” Typically, if a dog behaves strangely or lunges to bite while someone is walking on the street, this watch protects them.
How does this smartwatch work?
If a dog comes to attack while someone is walking on the road, they need to immediately press a special button on the smartwatch. As soon as that button is pressed, the watch releases ultrasonic sound waves with a capacity of 20 to 40 kilohertz. These sound waves are inaudible to humans but are heard very clearly and uncomfortably by dogs. Frightened by or unable to bear that sound, street dogs turn back and flee on the spot.
The student team says this smartwatch will be highly useful for small children, women traveling alone, elderly people walking at night, and employees on duty. They clarified that the sound waves released through this watch do not cause any permanent harm to dogs — they only scare them into running away. Hence, it is completely safe for animals as well.
The “Sense-K9” smartwatch, which is currently completing its testing phase, will soon be made available to the public in the market. Experts believe that once this watch becomes available, it could significantly curb incidents of street dog bites in the country.
