New Delhi: Details of Justice Surya Kant’s and his wife’s assets have gone viral on social media amid reports of his imminent elevation as the next Chief Justice of India. The official disclosure, available on the Supreme Court website, outlines movable and immovable properties worth several crores.
As per the declaration, Justice Surya Kant holds 16 fixed deposits valued at Rs 4.11 crore, while his wife maintains six fixed deposits worth Rs 1.96 crore. Combined, the family possesses over Rs 8 crore in bank deposits. The couple also declared 1.1 kilograms of gold ornaments and six kilograms of silver items.
In terms of immovable assets, Justice Surya Kant owns a residence in Sector 10, Chandigarh, 13.5 acres of agricultural land in Golpura village (Panchkula district), a 500-square-yard plot in New Chandigarh, a 285-square-yard house in Greater Kailash–I (New Delhi), and plots in Gurugram and Chandigarh. Additionally, the family owns 12 acres of farmland in Hisar district.
Interestingly, the declaration reveals that Justice Surya Kant does not own a personal vehicle, while his wife owns a WagonR. The couple’s two daughters also hold modest assets, including gold ornaments and fixed deposits totaling around Rs 59 lakh.
The disclosures come at a time when Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has recommended Justice Surya Kant’s name to the Centre for appointment as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. The incumbent Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai is scheduled to retire on November 23, following which Justice Surya Kant is expected to assume the nation’s top judicial position.
