New Delhi: The Central Government announced the appointment of Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). A notification to this effect was issued after the President approved the appointment in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.
Justice Surya Kant will assume office on November 24 as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, succeeding the incumbent CJI, Justice B. R. Gavai, whose tenure ends on November 23. This will be the first time that a lawyer from Haryana will hold the country’s highest judicial post.

Justice Surya Kant began his judicial career as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and later served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Over the years, he has been part of several key benches that delivered landmark judgments, including cases related to the abrogation of Article 370 and the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme.
Justice Surya Kant is expected to serve as Chief Justice until February 9, 2027, with a tenure spanning nearly 14 months.
