New Delhi: Justice Sanjiv Khanna concluded his term as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 13, 2025. In his farewell address, Justice Khanna emphasized that he would not be assuming any official roles post-retirement but expressed interest in continuing to contribute to the judicial system in some capacity.

Justice Khanna, who took office as CJI on November 11, 2024, served in the Supreme Court since January 18, 2019. Before his elevation to the apex court, he had been appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and became a permanent judge the following year. On his final day, the Supreme Court Bar Association hosted a farewell function to honor his tenure.
Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is set to succeed Justice Khanna as the 52nd CJI. He will take the oath of office on May 14, 2025, administered by President Droupadi Murmu.
