Japan Launches Futuristic ‘Human Washing Machine’; First Units Already Purchased

Japan has officially introduced a futuristic “human washing machine,” a pod-like device where a person lies down, closes the lid and gets fully cleaned — similar to washing laundry, but without spinning. Featuring soft water jets, cleansing foam, gentle massage actions and relaxing music, the machine offers an experience closer to a spa therapy than a traditional bath. The device, developed by Japanese company Science, became a major attraction at the recent World Expo in Osaka, drawing long queues throughout the six-month event.

The overwhelming response at the Expo led to unexpected commercial interest. Visitors, particularly from abroad, showed high curiosity, prompting a U.S. resort company to ask whether the product could be purchased for public use. That enquiry encouraged Science to begin commercial production. The concept itself has deep roots — a similar “future human washer” was displayed at the 1970 Osaka Expo, which inspired Science’s current president when he was just 10 years old.

For safety, the washing pod is equipped with sensors that monitor the user’s heartbeat and other vital signs during operation. The combination of automation and relaxation has positioned the product as a luxury wellness innovation, blending technology with personal care.

The first commercial unit has been purchased by a hotel in Osaka, which plans to offer the human washing machine as a premium service for its guests. Another confirmed buyer is Yamada Denki, one of Japan’s largest electronics retailers, which hopes the rare device will attract customers to its stores. Science says it will manufacture only around 50 units to maintain exclusivity. According to local reports, the price of each unit is about 60 million yen (approximately $385,000 or ₹3.2 crore). With this launch, Japan has turned a long-imagined idea into reality, offering a hands-free, high-tech bathing experience that could redefine personal hygiene in the future.
