The conflict in the Middle East has intensified sharply, taking a new dimension beyond conventional warfare. In a significant escalation, the war has extended into the technological domain, marking the emergence of a “tech war.” A cloud computing data center operated by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Bahrain was targeted in a missile strike reportedly carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), causing severe damage to critical infrastructure.
The attack led to major disruptions in cloud services across the Gulf region, with several businesses and IT operations coming to a standstill. The incident highlights the growing vulnerability of digital infrastructure in conflict zones, as reliance on cloud-based systems continues to expand across sectors. Industry experts have termed the disruption as one of the most serious cyber-physical impacts in the region in recent times.
Iran has defended its actions by alleging that such data centers were being used by intelligence agencies of the United States and Israel to support surveillance and military operations. According to Tehran, these facilities were enabling monitoring of its strategic activities, prompting a direct strike on technology infrastructure rather than traditional military targets.
In a further escalation, Iran had earlier designated 18 major American technology firms—including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Meta Platforms—as “terrorist organizations.” It has also warned of further attacks targeting US-linked tech infrastructure in the Gulf. As restoration efforts are underway in Bahrain, the development has raised global concerns over digital security and the widening scope of modern warfare.
