Iran Retaliates With Advanced ‘Khaibar’ Missile After Leader’s Death

The Middle East has been thrust into heightened turmoil following joint US-Israel strikes on Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The development has sharply escalated regional tensions, pushing the already volatile situation toward a broader confrontation. Governments across the region are closely monitoring the fallout as fears of a wider conflict grow.

In swift retaliation, Iran launched a large-scale offensive involving drones and ballistic missiles aimed at Israeli cities. The strikes were described as one of Tehran’s most aggressive responses in recent years. In addition to Israel, Iran reportedly targeted US military installations located in Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain — nations viewed as strategic partners of Washington.

A key feature of Iran’s retaliation was the reported deployment of its advanced Khorramshahr-4 ballistic missile, also known as “Khaibar.” The fourth-generation missile is said to have a range of approximately 2,000 kilometres and the capacity to carry a 1,500-kilogram warhead. It reportedly travels at hypersonic speeds, making interception by existing air defence systems extremely difficult. Analysts note that its rapid launch capability and radar-evasive design add to its strategic significance.

In response to the escalating threat, the United States has deployed the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln strike group to the region. The carrier, supported by guided-missile destroyers, combat aircraft and helicopters, has been positioned near Middle Eastern waters to strengthen deterrence and ensure rapid operational readiness. Nuclear propulsion enables the carrier group to sustain prolonged deployment at sea.

Although no direct large-scale confrontation has yet been confirmed, the substantial military build-up on both sides has transformed the Middle East into a tense strategic theatre. With advanced missile systems on one side and expanded naval deployments on the other, global powers are watching closely as the crisis threatens to destabilize regional security and energy markets in the days ahead.
