Amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, diplomatic and political friction between Iran and Israel has further escalated following sharp remarks made by former Iranian Defence Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani. The developments come at a time when the region continues to witness heightened instability and military confrontation.
Ashtiani alleged that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is using the ongoing war as a protective shield to evade his corruption and criminal proceedings. He claimed that Netanyahu’s political survival is increasingly dependent on the continuation of conflict in the region.
The former Iranian minister further stated that if the war were to end, Netanyahu would be directly exposed to legal consequences, including the possibility of imprisonment. He accused the Israeli leader of deliberately prolonging hostilities to delay judicial action in corruption-related cases.
Netanyahu is currently facing three major corruption cases in Israel, commonly referred to as Case 1000, Case 2000, and Case 4000. These involve allegations of receiving luxury gifts in exchange for political favors, entering into agreements with media executives for favourable coverage, and granting regulatory benefits to telecom companies in return for positive publicity.
Iran has intensified its criticism by calling for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant against Netanyahu, holding him responsible for civilian casualties in Gaza and Lebanon. These statements have further deepened diplomatic tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv.
Israel has firmly rejected the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated propaganda. Israeli officials stated that Iran lacks credibility to comment on judicial matters of democratic nations. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s corruption trials are scheduled to resume on April 12 following the lifting of a state of emergency, with legal experts suggesting that proceedings could extend into 2027 due to lengthy judicial processes and potential appeals.
