Tehran: Iran has initiated extensive preparations for the official state funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, months after the ceremony was postponed due to the intense conflict that gripped West Asia. With military tensions involving the United States and Israel reportedly easing, Iranian authorities are moving forward with plans to hold the funeral on a historic scale.
According to Iranian state media, a dedicated “Special Headquarters” has been established to oversee the arrangements for the state funeral and related ceremonies. While officials have not yet announced the exact date of the event, preparations are said to be progressing rapidly.
Special Coordination Mechanism Established
Iranian state television reported that Mohsen Mahmoudi, who heads the Tehran Coordination Council for Islamic Propagation, confirmed the formation of the special body responsible for coordinating the funeral proceedings.
He stated that various government departments, security agencies, and administrative bodies are working jointly to finalize plans for what is expected to be one of the largest public gatherings in Iran’s recent history.
Funeral Delayed by Regional Conflict
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic of Iran for more than three decades, reportedly died during the initial phase of U.S.-Israeli military strikes earlier this year. The subsequent escalation in regional hostilities prevented Iranian authorities from organizing a full-scale state funeral at the time.
Although a limited memorial event was conducted in April to honor the late leader, officials deferred the official state funeral due to security concerns and the ongoing conflict.
Millions Expected to Attend
Iranian authorities expect the funeral to draw millions of mourners from across the country, along with delegations and representatives from numerous foreign nations.
Officials said comprehensive security measures are being implemented throughout Tehran to ensure the smooth conduct of the ceremony and prevent any security incidents during the large-scale gathering.
Event Seen as Politically Significant
The funeral comes at a critical juncture for Iran as the country navigates a period of political transition and regional uncertainty. Although a temporary ceasefire has reportedly been in effect since April, a permanent peace agreement has yet to be reached.

Following Khamenei’s death, reports indicated that his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was selected as the country’s new Supreme Leader. However, he has not yet made a public appearance since assuming the position, adding to speculation about Iran’s evolving political landscape.
