New Delhi: Indian Railways has introduced a major change for train passengers, implementing a limited luggage policy and electronic weighing system at key railway stations. The new initiative, which mirrors airport luggage checks, aims to streamline train travel, enhance passenger convenience, and improve safety by regulating excess baggage.
Under the new regulations, passengers are required to have their luggage weighed at electronic machines installed at stations. Specific weight limits have been set for different classes: First AC passengers can carry up to 70 kg free, with an additional 15 kg allowed for a nominal fee; AC 2-Tier travelers are allowed 50 kg free plus 10 kg for a fee; AC 3-Tier and Sleeper Class passengers can carry 40 kg free with an extra 10 kg for a fee; and Second Class travelers are permitted 35 kg free with an additional 10 kg for a fee. Passengers exceeding these limits must pay extra charges, and unbooked excess baggage detected during travel may attract fines up to six times the standard rate.
