Indian Army Releases New Guidelines on Social Media Use

The Indian Army has announced a new set of social media guidelines for its soldiers and officers, relaxing earlier restrictions while maintaining national security protocols. In a key decision, the army has allowed its personnel to use social media platforms like Instagram, but only in a limited capacity. According to the updated guidelines, soldiers are permitted to access Instagram as “passive observers,” meaning they can view posts and reels, but are not allowed to post content or create reels themselves. Additionally, they are prohibited from commenting, liking, or reacting to other posts.

Under the new policy, soldiers are also banned from posting photos, videos, or opinions on social media and cannot engage in discussions or comment on social or political issues. Any responses to such issues should only be made after retirement, the Army clarified. The army has emphasized the need for soldiers to monitor and report any fake or misleading information regarding the military on social media, directing such content to higher authorities for action.

The Army has extended similar restrictions to other social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Quora, advising personnel to use them only for informational and knowledge-sharing purposes. Platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram can only be used for personal, non-classified communications with known contacts. LinkedIn should be utilized solely for professional networking and job opportunities.

This decision comes as the Army acknowledges the necessity of soldiers staying informed in the digital age, while maintaining a balance between security and digital awareness. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi stated that smartphones have become essential tools for soldiers to stay connected with their families and access educational resources like e-books. However, he emphasized the importance of thoughtful responses rather than impulsive reactions. The new guidelines aim to strike a balance between staying informed and safeguarding national security, especially in light of previous incidents such as the 2020 ban on 89 apps to prevent security risks like “honey traps.”
