Tensions in West Asia have escalated sharply since February 28, with attacks between Iran and the United States intensifying across the region. The situation worsened when Iran blocked the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, a key channel for global energy transport. Despite the high-risk environment, India has successfully safeguarded its vital oil and gas supplies through proactive diplomatic engagement.
A recent Bloomberg report highlighted that an Indian LPG tanker successfully navigated the highly dangerous Strait of Hormuz under the protection of the Iranian navy. This safe passage was facilitated through diplomatic consultations conducted by New Delhi. Iranian naval officials confirmed that they carefully verified the ship’s details and the crew’s nationality before granting clearance, allowing the Indian crew to proceed along a designated secure route.
Navigating the Strait of Hormuz remains extremely perilous. The Indian tanker, which had anchored in the Persian Gulf for ten days, resumed its journey only after receiving formal permission. Disruptions in navigation signals due to the conflict forced the crew to switch off the automatic identification system (AIS) and keep lifeboats ready. Iranian protection extended up to the Gulf of Oman, after which Indian naval vessels ensured the tanker’s safe arrival in India.
The Strait of Hormuz handles approximately 20% of global crude oil and gas shipments. Addressing the ongoing crisis, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that continuous diplomatic dialogue with Iran has enabled India’s LPG and LNG tankers to operate safely. He also noted that around 22 Indian vessels remain in the region, with the Indian Navy actively working to secure their safe passage.
Despite threats from naval mines and drone attacks, India is effectively leveraging both diplomacy and defense measures to protect its energy supplies. The combined approach underscores the country’s strategic capability to maintain uninterrupted fuel transport for industrial and domestic needs, even amid volatile geopolitical conditions.
