Recent US-Israel strikes in Iranian cities have caused massive destruction to buildings and infrastructure, exposing vulnerabilities in Iran’s defense systems. The attacks have particularly cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Chinese-imported HQ-9B air defense system, which was expected to safeguard critical targets. Analysts now question whether Chinese military hardware can reliably perform in high-intensity conflict zones.
Previously, Iran relied on Russia’s S-300 air defense system. However, after it failed to intercept American missiles, Tehran turned to China, procuring the HQ-9B system as an alternative. The system, developed by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, is designed to counter targets up to 260 kilometers away and intercept aircraft or missiles at altitudes of up to 50 kilometers. Iran deployed it to protect its nuclear facilities and fuel-refining plants.
Despite its advanced specifications, the HQ-9B failed to prevent Israeli attacks, including strikes that endangered senior leadership. This has sparked discussions over the reliability of Chinese defense technology, particularly in comparison to American systems like the Patriot missile defense. Critics note that similar Chinese systems in Pakistan previously struggled to intercept incoming attacks, highlighting potential operational limitations.
The recent failures at Iran’s nuclear and strategic sites have intensified scrutiny of China’s military technology and strategic defense capabilities.
