Amid heightened global scrutiny over Iran’s nuclear programme, the country has secured a notable diplomatic position at the United Nations, triggering sharp reactions from the United States. Iran has been elected as one of the vice-chairs of the ongoing Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference being held in New York, marking a significant development in multilateral nuclear diplomacy.
The appointment has been viewed as a diplomatic gain for Iran, which continues to face extensive sanctions imposed by the United States and several Western allies over its nuclear activities. Although the vice-chair position is largely procedural and does not confer direct decision-making authority, it carries symbolic importance within the global nuclear governance framework.
According to diplomatic sources, Iran’s candidature was proposed and supported by member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The country has been elected as one of the 34 vice-chairs of the conference, which oversees discussions on nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and peaceful use of nuclear energy under the NPT framework.
The United States has strongly opposed the development, with its representative Christopher Yoo describing Iran’s inclusion in the leadership structure as an “insult” to the NPT process. Washington questioned the credibility of assigning responsibilities within a nuclear oversight forum to a country it accuses of violating international nuclear obligations.
Responding to the criticism, Iran accused the United States of politicising international institutions and maintaining double standards in global diplomacy. The NPT, which came into force in 1970, remains the cornerstone international treaty aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons while promoting peaceful nuclear cooperation and advancing disarmament goals. Analysts note that while the role is symbolic, it provides Iran with a stronger platform to assert its position in global nuclear discussions.
