The newly identified HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) is causing widespread concern as it rapidly spreads across countries, starting from China. Health authorities have reported that the virus is impacting thousands, with millions now being treated in hospitals across China. Experts warn that its swift transmission mirrors the patterns of COVID-19. In particular, children under the age of 14 in northern China are being disproportionately affected by the virus, with symptoms primarily affecting respiratory functions and causing severe damage to the lungs.
Though the HMPV virus was first discovered over two decades ago, its sudden surge in cases has raised alarms. Despite extensive research, no vaccine or effective treatment has been developed in the past 20 years. As a result, experts believe the virus may have become more potent over time.

Spread to Japan and Hong Kong Raises Concerns
Following its rapid spread in China, the virus has now reached Japan. According to a report by Japan Broadcasting Corporation, Japan has reported 718,000 confirmed cases, with over 5,000 hospitals and clinics across the country treating patients. In December alone, Japan recorded 94,259 new cases.
The virus has also been detected in Hong Kong, though the number of cases remains relatively low. In response, the Hong Kong government has issued warnings and is actively educating the public to prevent further spread.
Experts are raising concerns that the virus could soon reach India, given its proximity to the affected regions. Health authorities are urging caution and monitoring the situation closely as the virus continues to spread across borders.
