Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation of the junior doctor’s murder case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court has directed the CBI to submit a comprehensive report within three weeks.
This move comes amid widespread protests demanding the death penalty for the accused, Sanjay. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had previously warned the Kolkata Police that the case would be handed over to the CBI if not resolved by August 18. The High Court’s decision to transfer the case came five days earlier than the deadline set by Banerjee.
New and disturbing details have emerged from the investigation. Police reports confirm that Sanjay first murdered the victim before sexually assaulting her. The post-mortem examination revealed severe injuries on multiple parts of her body, including her lips, eyes, neck, and limbs. Doctors noted particularly brutal injuries to her genital area, with significant blood loss reported. The police have concluded that these findings indicate the victim was killed before being raped.
