Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah has claimed that it carried out a successful strike against Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system using an FPV (First Person View) drone. According to the group, a key missile launching unit of the system was destroyed in the attack, and a video purportedly showing the strike was also released. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not issued any official confirmation or response regarding the incident so far.
The Iron Dome is widely regarded as one of Israel’s most advanced aerial defence systems, designed to intercept incoming rockets and missiles. The reported attack has raised concerns among defence analysts, as it suggests a potential vulnerability in a system that is considered highly reliable against conventional aerial threats.
Military experts point out that while traditional drones rely on radio signals or GPS navigation and can be disrupted using electronic jamming systems, FPV drones allegedly used in this incident operate differently. These drones are believed to be controlled via fibre-optic cables, allowing real-time visual navigation and making them largely immune to standard electronic warfare countermeasures.
Because of this wired control mechanism, electronic jamming systems are reportedly ineffective against FPV drones. Analysts suggest that this capability may have enabled Hezbollah to bypass Israeli detection systems and directly target an Iron Dome launcher unit, marking a significant tactical development in drone warfare.
In response to the evolving threat, Israeli defence authorities are reportedly reviewing security measures around Iron Dome installations. As a precaution, reports indicate that Israel has begun installing protective metal net structures around missile launcher batteries to physically block incoming drones. Defence experts warn that if FPV drone threats are not effectively countered, they could pose a serious challenge to existing air defence systems in future conflicts.
