Jogulamba Gadwal district is witnessing a significant influx of floodwater into the Jurala reservoir amid heavy rainfall. Authorities have raised all 10 gates of the reservoir to release excess water downstream as a precautionary measure. Local residents noted that this is the first instance in 18 years that the gates have been opened in May.

The heavy rainfall in the Krishna river catchment areas across Maharashtra and Karnataka has resulted in flood inflows increasing dramatically at the Joorala project. Flood discharge rose from 6,900 cusecs early Thursday morning to a peak of 80,000 cusecs by noon.

The reservoir’s maximum storage capacity is 9.657 TMC (thousand million cubic feet). By 3 PM, water levels reached 7.682 TMC, and by 6 PM, flood inflow stood at 66,000 cusecs, prompting officials to open the gates and manage the excess water release.

Simultaneously, heavy showers around Maharashtra’s Ujani Dam area are further contributing to rising flood levels in the reservoir. Officials have indicated that flood inflow could reach up to 100,000 cusecs by Thursday night. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to mitigate downstream flood risks and ensure public safety.
