Gen-Z Anti-Corruption Movement Spreads Globally, Turns Violent in Mexico

The Gen-Z anti-corruption movement that began in Nepal is rapidly spreading worldwide, with Mexico now witnessing intense and violent youth-led protests. Thousands of young demonstrators took to the streets, accusing the government of failing to control escalating crime and corruption, and demanded the resignation of Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. Protesters attempted to storm the National Palace, breaking through security barricades around the presidential complex. The clashes turned violent as police intervened, leading to stone-pelting and attacks with sticks, ropes and incendiary materials. Officials reported that nearly 120 people were injured, including around 100 police personnel, and at least 20 protesters have been arrested so far.

The youth uprising draws inspiration from Nepal, where the Gen-Z movement brought down the K. P. Oli-led government after massive protests against political corruption. Nepal subsequently came under interim rule headed by Sushila Karki, but not before over 70 people were killed and hundreds injured in violent clashes. The movement has since gained momentum in North America.

In Mexico, public anger intensified after the assassination of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan in the state of Michoacán, who was shot dead during a Day of the Dead public event on November 1. Despite President Sheinbaum enjoying a high approval rating in her first year in office, she is facing heightened criticism over the government’s inability to curb violent crime.
