The Central government has announced a significant New Year relief for private vehicle users travelling on national highways by simplifying the FASTag verification process. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to completely do away with post-issuance Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification for newly issued FASTags, with the new system set to come into force from February 1. Under the revised norms, verification will be completed before issuing the FASTag, ensuring it becomes fully functional immediately upon delivery and reducing hassles faced by vehicle owners.
The new rules will also benefit existing FASTag users, as they will no longer be required to periodically update KYV details. NHAI clarified that verification will be mandated only in specific cases, such as improper fixing of the FASTag, usage of a single FASTag for multiple vehicles, or when complaints are received. If no such issues arise, existing FASTags will continue to operate without interruption, providing relief to lakhs of private vehicle owners who earlier faced account blocks and toll plaza delays.

Under the revised framework, NHAI has placed the onus of verification entirely on banks issuing FASTags. Banks have been instructed to verify vehicle details through the VAHAN database, and seek RC copies only if the data is unavailable online. The authority stated that the new process, applicable to both offline and online FASTag purchases, is aimed at easing the burden on motorists while ensuring faster, more transparent, and seamless toll collection across national highways.
