Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and president of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after a gunman opened fire at him during a wedding function in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu on Wednesday night. Abdullah had attended the event along with several senior leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and the Chief Minister’s advisor Nasir Aslam Wani.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the leaders were leaving the venue after the function. An unidentified man allegedly approached Abdullah and fired at him from point-blank range. However, his personal security personnel reacted swiftly and restrained the attacker before he could fire a second round, preventing any harm to the veteran leader.
While Abdullah escaped unhurt, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary reportedly sustained minor injuries during the scuffle that followed the attack. Police later identified the accused as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu who is reportedly involved in the mining business. Officials said the weapon used in the attack was a licensed firearm and preliminary findings suggest the accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Reacting to the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said his father narrowly escaped a fatal attack and termed the episode a serious security lapse, questioning how the accused managed to approach so closely despite Z+ security cover. Surinder Choudhary also criticised the local police for failing to ensure adequate security at a venue attended by VVIPs. Police have taken the accused into custody and launched an investigation to determine whether the attack was part of a larger conspiracy or driven by personal motives.
