New Delhi: In a significant development in the National Herald case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. This marks the first instance of a chargesheet being filed against members of the Gandhi family in connection with any legal case.

The chargesheet was submitted before the Rouse Avenue Court in the national capital. The court is scheduled to take up the matter for hearing on April 25, 2025.

The development comes just days after the ED initiated steps to seize properties worth Rs 700 crore belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the company that publishes the National Herald newspaper. The agency is probing alleged money laundering activities linked to the case.

The National Herald, originally founded by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was taken over by Young Indian Pvt. Ltd., a company in which Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi each hold a 38% stake, making them majority shareholders.

The ED has alleged that the takeover of AJL by Young Indian was carried out with the intent of gaining control over the assets of the former, which include several high-value properties across the country.

The case has political and legal implications, as the Congress party continues to defend the Gandhis, calling the investigation “politically motivated.”
