Sitaram Yechury, the national general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], is reported to be in a critical condition. Yechury was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi following a severe lung infection. According to sources at AIIMS, he is currently on a ventilator. The CPI(M) Politburo has issued a statement confirming the seriousness of his condition and the ongoing treatment by a medical team.

Yechury, who was hospitalized on August 19, initially showed signs of improvement, but his health has since worsened. This development has raised concerns among his supporters and the party leadership. Born on August 12, 1952, in Chennai, Yechury holds a BA in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and an MA from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He joined the Students Federation of India (SFI) in 1974 and became a member of CPI(M) in 1975. Yechury has been a significant figure in the party, serving as a member of the CPI(M) Central Committee since 1984 and as the party’s general secretary since 2015.
