Washington: Prominent social activist and political commentator Charlie Kirk (31) was shot dead during a public event at Utah Valley University in the United States, triggering nationwide outrage and concerns over rising political violence. Kirk was addressing students as part of his American Comeback Tour when gunfire erupted from a nearby building about 200 yards away. He suffered critical neck injuries and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Following his death, the US President posthumously announced the nation’s highest civilian honour — the Presidential Medal of Freedom — for Kirk. President Donald Trump expressed deep grief at a ceremony held at the Pentagon, describing Kirk as “one of the greatest figures of this generation” and “an extraordinary warrior who inspired millions.” Trump added that Kirk’s voice and the courage he instilled in youth would remain unforgettable.

Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, a youth-focused conservative organisation, and had a large social media following. He played a key role in mobilising Republican voters during the 2024 US presidential election. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched a probe into the killing. Security forces locked down the campus immediately after the attack and have begun a manhunt for the shooter. The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of political figures and the growing threat of political violence in the country.
