The Centre has taken a major step to curb rising cyber fraud and mobile phone theft cases across the country. With social media usage increasing rapidly, many users have been falling victim to cybercriminals by clicking unknown links and sharing OTPs and bank details, resulting in losses ranging from thousands to crores of rupees. The government believes a stronger cybersecurity framework on smartphones is essential to safeguard consumers.

The government has decided to make its cyber-security application Sanchar Saathi compulsory on all new smartphones. Orders have been issued to mobile manufacturers to provide this app as a default feature. The app has already helped trace more than seven lakh stolen phones since its launch in January this year and has proved effective in addressing cyber threats.

Unlike regular applications, Sanchar Saathi cannot be deleted from the device. Companies have been given 90 days to ensure pre-installation on upcoming smartphone models, while devices already in the supply chain must receive the app through software updates. The key objective is to enable users to track lost phones and reduce vulnerabilities associated with cyber fraud.

Industry officials note a potential roadblock, as Android does not allow pre-installation of non-proprietary third-party or government apps without special approval. Apple has reportedly rejected similar requests from the government in the past, raising speculation that it may oppose this directive again. Neither the Centre nor smartphone brands have officially reacted yet, and further clarity is expected in the coming days.
