The central government has issued a directive prohibiting its employees from using artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini, citing concerns over the security of sensitive information. With AI adoption rapidly increasing across sectors, officials warned that sharing government data through these platforms could pose serious risks, potentially exposing classified national information.
Union Minister Jitendra Prasad informed the Rajya Sabha that some government personnel had already shared official data through AI tools, and in certain cases, critical government information had been transmitted abroad. Highlighting the potential dangers, he stressed that the government is taking proactive steps to prevent any leakage of sensitive data.
The directive explicitly instructs all central government employees to refrain from using AI tools for official purposes. Authorities emphasized that these measures are necessary to safeguard national security and maintain strict control over the dissemination of government information, while steps are being taken to monitor and regulate AI usage within government departments.
