The central government has announced a landmark initiative to tackle the ongoing gas shortage in the country. Under the scheme, 5-kg gas cylinders will be distributed free of cost to migrant workers living and working across various regions. The move aims to improve the living standards of laborers while reducing their expenditure on cooking fuel.
Official letters regarding the scheme have already been sent to all state governments. With state-level cooperation, eligible migrant workers will be identified, and the distribution is scheduled to begin by the end of this month. Each worker will receive a 5-kg cylinder completely free of charge.
The distribution process to all states will commence on March 23. Alongside this, the government has also decided to increase the supply of commercial cylinders by 20% to meet the growing demand of hotels and small businesses, ensuring that the gas shortage does not impact essential services.
The decision to provide 5-kg cylinders specifically addresses the challenges faced by migrant workers who frequently travel for employment. Smaller cylinders are easier to carry and handle, offering convenience and practical support to the workforce.
