The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has postponed its verdict in the case involving Indian star wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the Olympics. Dr. Annabelle Bennett stated that the final decision would be announced tomorrow, on August 11. Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg wrestling final due to being 100 grams overweight. Despite winning her semifinal match, she approached the court to be awarded a silver medal. Consequently, the temporary division of CAS initiated an investigation into Phogat’s request.
Vinesh Phogat requested that she be awarded a silver medal, jointly with the Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom she defeated in the semifinals. However, her lawyers, Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, argued that the medal should be awarded solely to Phogat. Following the hearing, the Indian Olympic Association and the lawyers expressed optimism about a favorable outcome. Although a verdict was expected today, it has been postponed.
In response to the current situation, Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), expressed his understanding of Vinesh Phogat’s situation. He mentioned that he is still surprised that such a minor issue led to her disqualification from the final.
