Fresh attacks targeting commercial vessels along key international shipping routes have triggered global concern over maritime security in the Middle East region. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a cargo vessel anchored nearly 70 kilometres northeast of Fujairah port in the United Arab Emirates was forcibly seized by unidentified individuals. Reports indicate that the vessel is being redirected towards Iranian waters, raising fears of further escalation near the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz.

The latest development comes amid growing instability in Gulf waters and renewed concerns over the safety of commercial shipping lanes. Maritime security analysts warn that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, could significantly impact global trade and energy supplies. Several countries are closely monitoring the situation following the reported hijacking incident.

In another major incident, an Indian-flagged cargo vessel named “Haji Ali” was struck in a drone attack off the coast of Oman on Wednesday. The Gujarat-based vessel, which was transporting livestock from Somalia to Sharjah, reportedly sank after the attack. Oman’s Coast Guard successfully rescued all 14 Indian crew members onboard, preventing a major loss of life.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs strongly condemned the attack, calling the targeting of commercial ships and civilian sailors “completely unacceptable.” The ministry urged the international community to ensure the protection of maritime trade routes and maintain security for civilian vessels operating in international waters.

Meanwhile, tensions in the region have also raised concerns over the safety of Chinese vessels navigating through the Gulf. Reports suggest that the Chinese crude oil supertanker “Yuan Hua Hu,” which had remained stranded in the Gulf region for nearly two months, recently crossed the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions. The development gains significance as the United States Navy continues blockade operations targeting Iranian vessels, while US President Donald Trump is currently on an official visit to China.
