Chennai: Prominent film producer Boney Kapoor has approached the Madras High Court over a dispute concerning a property owned by his late wife, legendary actress Sridevi. Kapoor alleges that three individuals are unlawfully claiming ownership of the ECR property, which the Kapoor family currently uses as a farmhouse, and has sought judicial intervention to protect the estate.
According to Kapoor’s petition, Sridevi legally purchased the property on April 19, 1988, from MC Sambandam Mudaliar after thoroughly reviewing all relevant documents, including inheritance certificates of Mudaliar’s three sons and two daughters. Recently, three individuals emerged claiming to be rightful heirs, with one asserting to be Mudaliar’s second wife and the other two claiming to be his sons. They filed an appeal at the Tahsildar’s office asserting their share in the property. Kapoor contends that local government authorities facilitated the illegal transfer of rights and has urged the court to annul the fraudulent claims.
Kapoor also emphasized that Mudaliar’s second marriage occurred while his first wife was alive, making it legally invalid and nullifying the inheritance claims. The petition requests the cancellation of all fraudulent documents and restoration of justice, highlighting that Sridevi had painstakingly acquired the property.
Justice Anand Venkatesh has instructed the Tambaram Taluka Tahsildar to decide the matter within four weeks. The dispute also involves a challenge to a revenue-issued inheritance certificate presented by the claimants, which Kapoor argues was issued without proper authority. Kapoor cited the original 1960 family property transfer agreement as the legal basis for Sridevi’s purchase, asserting that the current claims lack legitimacy.
Boney Kapoor, who married Sridevi in 1996, continues to safeguard her memory and estate following her passing in 2018. Their daughters, Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, are active in the film industry. The legal proceedings over Sridevi’s Chennai property have attracted significant attention, underscoring the importance of protecting the late actress’s assets.
