Battle for Lok Sabha Speaker: BJP’s Om Birla vs Congress’ K Suresh

Om Birla, NDA’s nominee for the position of Lok Sabha Speaker, submitted his nomination today following a meeting with Prime Minister Modi. The NDA has urged opposition parties to support Birla’s candidacy, but they have declined. The INDIA Bloc Alliance has also entered the race, with Kerala MP Suresh filing his nomination from the Congress party.

This marks the first contested election for the Lok Sabha Speaker in India’s 75-year history, as previous elections have been unanimous. Despite supporting Birla, the NDA has faced opposition demands for the deputy speaker position. The INDIA Alliance has fielded their own candidate, asserting their participation in the Speaker election process.
