Dhaka: Senior Awami League leader and noted academic Ramesh Chandra Sen (86) died in custody after spending 18 months in jail, triggering renewed concerns over the treatment of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. A former Member of Parliament and minister, Sen’s health reportedly deteriorated during his prolonged incarceration, despite no conviction in the cases against him.
Sen had repeatedly sought bail on medical grounds, citing serious health issues, but courts denied his pleas. His condition worsened over time, and he eventually died while in custody. Even during his imprisonment, Sen continued to enjoy strong public support due to his contributions to education and public life in Bangladesh.
Reports indicate that Sen was arrested following an attack on him by a mob 18 months ago. However, police allegedly detained Sen instead of the attackers, without clearly explaining the grounds for his arrest. Multiple cases were subsequently filed against him, effectively preventing his release despite eligibility for bail in individual cases.
The death comes close on the heels of another incident in which Pralay Chaki, a Hindu leader associated with the Awami League, died while in police custody. These incidents have intensified concerns and criticism over alleged discrimination and the treatment of Hindu minority leaders in the country.
