The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has reportedly killed 56 Pakistani soldiers in recent attacks on army convoys, escalating its fight against Pakistan’s control over Balochistan since 1948. The BLA claims its armed struggle is against Pakistan’s forceful annexation of 44% of their land.
Though Balochistan leaders have declared independence, gaining official recognition is highly complicated. For Balochistan to become a sovereign state, it must:
Get Pakistan’s consent to release the territory.
Win support from powerful nations globally.
Submit a formal application to the United Nations Secretary-General affirming adherence to the UN Charter.
Secure approval from at least nine of the 15 UN Security Council members, including all five permanent members (China, France, Russia, UK, USA). Any veto from permanent members blocks recognition.
Obtain a two-thirds majority in the UN General Assembly vote.
With Pakistan facing severe internal crises and ongoing conflict with India, Balochistan’s chances of international recognition as an independent country remain very slim at present.
