Tensions escalated at Shamshabad International Airport on Friday morning as a Hyderabad-to-Kochi flight operated by IndiGo Airlines was delayed by nearly 12 hours, causing distress among Ayyappa devotees traveling for the pilgrimage. The prolonged delay, combined with inadequate communication from airport staff, prompted devotees to protest near the boarding gate, demanding immediate alternative arrangements or special flights.
The incident follows a series of disruptions over the past three days, during which flights to Kerala were either canceled or significantly delayed, leaving pilgrims stranded and frustrated. Devotees questioned airport authorities about the lack of prior notice for cancellations and delays and insisted on timely solutions to minimize inconvenience.
Airport officials attempted to pacify the crowd, but the absence of information regarding flight schedules and reasons for the delay intensified the unrest. Pilgrims expressed frustration over repeated disruptions by IndiGo Airlines, highlighting lapses in informing passengers promptly about delays.
The flight, initially scheduled to depart at 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday, did not arrive on time, and no explanations were provided for the delay. As devotees protested, airport staff worked to manage the situation and address the concerns of the stranded passengers, but tensions continued for several hours.
