New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs unanimously elected Atishi as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly during a legislative party meeting on Sunday. MLA Sanjeev Jha proposed her name, which received full support from the party members. Atishi’s election marks a historic moment as she becomes the first woman to hold this position in Delhi. The meeting was attended by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and 22 newly elected MLAs. Expressing gratitude, Atishi thanked Kejriwal and her party colleagues for their trust and pledged to represent the people effectively in the Assembly.
Atishi stated that the opposition would act as the voice of the people and hold the BJP government accountable for its promises. She emphasized that AAP would put pressure on the ruling party to fulfill its commitments. The BJP’s landslide victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections marked its return to power in the capital after 26 years. Rekha Gupta was recently sworn in as the Chief Minister.
The first session of the new Delhi Assembly is set to begin on February 24 and will continue for three days. The BJP has announced plans to present pending Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports on the previous AAP government’s performance, raising expectations over potential disclosures during the proceedings.
