Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday conducted a high-level review meeting on the implementation of the proposed free bus travel scheme for women. The meeting, held at the State Secretariat, was attended by senior officials from the Transport Department and Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).
Fulfilling a key election promise, the state government has decided to roll out the scheme on August 15, coinciding with Independence Day. The Chief Minister reviewed the operational framework, implementation challenges, financial implications, and necessary administrative preparations.
As part of the scheme, all women residing in Andhra Pradesh will be eligible for free travel in ordinary RTC buses, including Palle Velugu and Express services. Officials have been directed to issue ‘Zero Fare Tickets’ to beneficiaries.
The government is considering the use of Aadhaar-based identification to ensure proper beneficiary verification. A digital ticketing system or smart card mechanism may also be introduced to facilitate seamless access and prevent misuse.
Emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability, Chandrababu directed officials to put in place stringent measures to avoid irregularities. He instructed the formation of a dedicated task force comprising Transport and RTC officials to draft detailed guidelines and oversee smooth implementation.
The Chief Minister reiterated that this initiative is a major electoral commitment and should be executed at the earliest with efficiency and clarity.
