A major accident was averted in Telangana after a private travels bus caught fire on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada highway near Veliminedu in Chityal mandal. The bus, operated by Vihari Travels, was en route from Hyderabad to Nellore when flames erupted in the engine, reportedly due to a short circuit. The incident triggered panic among passengers, recalling the recent Tandur RTC bus tragedy that claimed 19 lives.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver noticed smoke emerging from the engine and immediately pulled the bus over to the roadside. Acting swiftly, he broke the rear windows and safely evacuated all passengers before the fire spread. Within minutes, the bus was engulfed in flames, but timely intervention prevented any casualties.
Fire tenders from two stations were dispatched to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze after an intense effort. Passengers revealed that the fire broke out barely ten minutes after they resumed their journey following a tea break. They expressed relief that the break likely saved their lives, as many would have been asleep otherwise. Authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident to determine the exact cause of the fire.
