Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh coalition government is intensifying efforts on district reorganization. Under the previous YSR Congress government, the number of districts was doubled from 13 to 26. Ahead of the recent assembly elections, coalition leaders promised the creation of new districts and mandals, with reports now suggesting an increase from 26 to potentially 32 districts.
To facilitate this, the government has constituted a seven-member Cabinet sub-committee. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has instructed the committee to finalize recommendations on district renaming and new mandal formations by December. The move aims to reduce the distance between district headquarters and residents, thereby improving administrative efficiency.
Key Proposals and Public Sentiments
Proposals include establishing new district headquarters at Markapuram, Amaravati, Guduru, Adoni, Palasa, and Madanapalle. There are also suggestions to reintegrate some constituencies into their former districts, such as transferring Gannavaram back to Krishna district and Adanki and Kandukuru to Prakasam district.
Public opposition has been reported regarding some existing district headquarters, prompting further government review. Additionally, demands to rename certain districts are under consideration.
The sub-committee will compile feedback and objections from citizens and elected representatives to prepare a comprehensive report for the government. Final decisions will consider public opinion alongside historical and cultural factors.
Experts warn that the process may extend beyond the initially targeted one-month period, requiring additional time for thorough completion.
