Kolkata: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a strong critique of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging a sharp rise in infiltrations, crimes against women, bomb blasts, and attacks on Hindus under her leadership.
Addressing a BJP public meeting at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, Shah claimed that “hundreds of BJP workers have been killed” since Mamata assumed office. “The people of Bengal are disillusioned with her governance. Her time is over. The BJP will come to power in the 2026 Assembly elections,” he said.
Shah also questioned Banerjee’s opposition to the Wakf (Amendment) Act, asking, “Who is she trying to protect by rejecting this law? Is there anything wrong with it? Should Bengal’s land be sacrificed for this?” He alleged that Banerjee is blocking both Operation Sindoor and the Wakf reforms to appease the Muslim vote bank.
Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, Shah defended the Centre’s counter-offensive, Operation Sindoor, and accused Banerjee of dishonouring Indian mothers and sisters by opposing it.
He further remarked that Mamata will oppose the Wakf law only until 2026, suggesting she would no longer remain in office after that.
It may be recalled that Mamata Banerjee has publicly refused to implement the Centre’s Wakf Amendment Act in West Bengal. The BJP has been increasingly vocal on this issue, projecting it as part of a broader narrative on national security and religious appeasement.
