The F-47, a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet under development for the US military, has been described by President Donald Trump as the “most devastating fighter jet ever.” Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump highlighted the aircraft’s advanced capabilities and also commented on its designation, saying he was curious about why it was named “47.”
The F-47 is designed with next-generation stealth features to significantly reduce radar visibility and is equipped with integrated sensor systems that enhance target detection and engagement. The aircraft features a canard configuration to improve stability and manoeuvrability, enabling both long-range strike missions using advanced missiles and close-range dogfights. It is also designed to operate alongside autonomous drones, known as Collaborative Combat Aircraft, which support manned missions.
Drawing on design elements from Boeing’s YF-118G Bird of Prey, the F-47 includes angled wings for improved stability and a curved nose for better aerodynamics. Compared to earlier fighter jets, it offers greater range, improved deployment flexibility, and the ability to adapt to a wide range of combat scenarios, making it suitable for future high-intensity conflicts.
In March 2025, the US Air Force commissioned Boeing to develop the F-47, viewing it as critical to maintaining air superiority, particularly in potential conflicts in the Indo-Pacific region. The Air Force plans to procure at least 185 aircraft, with the first jets expected to enter operational service by the end of the decade.
