Iran on Sunday officially confirmed the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in large-scale joint airstrikes carried out by Israel and the United States, marking a watershed moment in the country’s political history. Iranian state media reported that Khamenei’s daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law were also killed in the attack. The development comes amid heightened regional tensions and is expected to have far-reaching geopolitical consequences.

Born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, Khamenei emerged from a modest clerical family and pursued religious studies from an early age. He later became a close associate of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, playing a pivotal role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was imprisoned multiple times for opposing the Shah’s regime. He survived a bomb attack in 1981 that left his right arm paralysed. Khamenei served as Iran’s President from 1981 to 1989 before assuming the powerful post of Supreme Leader following Khomeini’s death.

As Supreme Leader for nearly 35 years, Khamenei wielded ultimate authority over Iran’s armed forces, judiciary and key state institutions, with powers surpassing those of the president under the country’s constitution. He maintained a hardline foreign policy stance, particularly toward the United States and its allies, while overseeing the expansion of Iran’s regional influence through support for allied groups in Lebanon, Yemen and Syria. Domestically, his tenure was marked by strict enforcement of Islamic laws, economic challenges driven by international sanctions and recurring public protests.

Khamenei’s death is widely seen as the end of a defining chapter in the Islamic Republic’s history. Attention has now turned to Iran’s constitutional process for succession and the potential implications for regional stability, global energy markets and ongoing diplomatic tensions in the Middle East.
