Tensions in the Middle East have reached a critical level as Iran faces sustained military strikes from the United States and Israel. In a strategic move, Iran has appointed veteran military strategist Ahmad Vahidi as the new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Vahidi assumes command following the death of former IRGC chief Mohammad Pakpour in an Israeli attack on March 1, positioning him at the forefront of Iran’s military operations during this high-stakes period.

Born in 1958 in Shiraz, Iran, Vahidi was a founding member of the IRGC during the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Over the past four decades, he has held key positions in Iran’s defense and intelligence apparatus, including senior leadership roles in the 1980s and as the first commander of the elite Quds Force from 1988 to 1997. Vahidi has also been implicated in international incidents, most notably the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Argentina, which led Interpol to issue a Red Notice against him, marking him as a globally wanted figure.

Vahidi is known for his hardline stance against the United States. He has consistently opposed foreign sanctions and actively contributed to strengthening Iran’s missile and defense capabilities. Analysts say his appointment signals Iran’s intent to intensify military pressure, with reports indicating that under Vahidi’s command, the IRGC is targeting U.S. military bases and allied installations across the Gulf region with drone and missile strikes.

In addition to his military expertise, Vahidi has held political positions, serving as Iran’s Defense Minister and Interior Minister, providing him with significant influence over both strategic and domestic policy. This combination of military and political experience makes him a key figure in Iran’s approach to navigating the ongoing conflict and responding to international pressures.

On Friday, Vahidi issued a stark warning that continued U.S. attacks could engulf the entire Middle East in conflict. Observers note that under his leadership, Iran’s drone and missile campaigns are expected to intensify, potentially altering the regional balance of power and escalating tensions further. His appointment underscores Tehran’s resolve to maintain a strong defensive posture amid the ongoing war.
