The Telangana government has intensified preventive measures against bird flu by establishing 24 checkposts along the state borders. In the erstwhile Nalgonda district, three checkposts have been set up, with officials turning back poultry vehicles arriving from Andhra Pradesh.

Severe Outbreak in Andhra Pradesh

The decision follows a significant outbreak of bird flu in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in East and West Godavari districts, where poultry farms have reported large-scale fatalities. In East Godavari, a red zone has been declared, while areas such as Tanuku, Unguturu, Tadepalligudem, and Nidadavolu have witnessed the deaths of lakhs of birds. Reports indicate that over 10,000 chickens are dying daily in individual farms.

Despite chicken being sold at Rs 30 per kg, demand has plummeted due to public concerns. Authorities have collected samples from affected poultry farms and sent them to a Pune laboratory for testing. A high alert has been issued, directing Animal Husbandry Department officials to be immediately notified of any poultry deaths. East Godavari District Collector Prashanthi has advised the public to limit chicken consumption as a precautionary measure.
