The brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata has triggered nationwide protests, with medical professionals continuing their demonstrations against the incident. Despite ongoing negotiations between the state government and the protesting doctors, no resolution has been reached yet, leading to a tense stalemate.
In a key development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the protest camp of the junior doctors on Saturday afternoon. Upon her arrival, protestors raised slogans demanding justice for the victim, intensifying the atmosphere at the site.
Addressing the protesting doctors, CM Banerjee expressed her solidarity with their cause:
*”I have also participated in protests as a student leader in the past, and you have the right to protest. I have been waiting for days to speak with you and find a solution. Despite advice from my security, I came here to salute your commitment. I am here not as a Chief Minister, but as your sister. I too want justice for the victim. I assure you that we will thoroughly investigate your demands and take strict action against those responsible.”*
Banerjee further announced the dissolution of the Patient Care Committee at R.G. Kar Hospital and called for the CBI to expedite the investigation. She urged the doctors to return to duty and assured them that no punitive actions would be taken.
However, the doctors remained firm, stating that they would not resume duties until their demands were fully addressed through proper discussions. Following this, CM Banerjee left the protest site. Meanwhile, the prime accused in the case, Sanjay Roy, is currently in judicial custody, with the investigation ongoing.
