Food delivery giants Swiggy, Zomato, and BigBasket are set to expand their services to include liquor delivery in several additional states. The new initiative aims to bring beer and wine directly to consumers’ homes in Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Goa, New Delhi, Karnataka, Haryana, and Kerala. Authorities are currently evaluating the potential advantages and disadvantages of implementing liquor delivery in these regions.
Currently, Swiggy and Zomato offer home delivery of liquor in West Bengal and Odisha. This service was initially introduced temporarily in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown when states like Chhattisgarh, Assam, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra granted temporary permissions for liquor delivery. However, the service has been maintained only in West Bengal and Odisha. According to officials, the policy has resulted in a 20-30 percent increase in liquor sales in these states.
A survey conducted by the International Spirits and Wines Association of India revealed overwhelming support for home delivery of liquor among residents of Hyderabad, with 100 percent of respondents in favor. It remains to be seen when this policy will be implemented in Hyderabad.
