At least five people were killed on Thursday after a massive fire broke out at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit and godown in Bihar’s Siwan district, officials confirmed. The unit belongs to Mohammad Ameeruddin Mian. The blaze reached the large stock of explosives stored on the premises, triggering a series of blasts.
The explosions continued for nearly two hours, sending residents fleeing in panic. The front of the building was destroyed, and concrete debris was thrown onto the adjoining main road. Some bodies were reportedly mutilated beyond recognition.
Several workers and other people were believed to be inside at the time of the blast. Local residents fear more people may be trapped under the rubble and that the death toll could rise.
Police teams and fire engines reached the spot soon after being alerted and stepped up rescue operations. Firefighters are working to contain the fire and are clearing debris to search for survivors.
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and whether the unit held the required permissions. Further details are awaited.
