Trump Promises $5,000 “Dividend” to Every American

Ahead of the upcoming midterm elections in November, US President Donald Trump has announced a major offer for the American people. He pledged that if the Republican Party wins control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the upcoming elections, thereby retaining its dominance over Congress, every adult in the country would be paid $5,000 (over ₹4.15 lakh in Indian currency). He made these remarks while addressing the Republican National Committee’s first midterm election convention, held in Dallas, Texas.

In his lengthy address in Dallas, which ran for nearly an hour and a half, Trump compared the American government to a successful corporate company. Just as a successful company distributes a share of its profits to shareholders as a “dividend,” he said the returns generated by the country’s economic progress would similarly be shared with its citizens. He named this proposal the “Trump Dividend,” stating that revenue generated through steep tariffs imposed on foreign imports, along with savings achieved through austerity measures in government, would be distributed directly to citizens. However, economic experts have pointed out that distributing this amount to nearly 27 crore American adults would place a burden of approximately $1.35 trillion, and that such a move would require congressional approval and legal authorisation.

The Republican Party organised this large gathering with the goal of securing victory in the upcoming midterm elections scheduled for November 3. On this platform, Trump did not limit himself to the announcement of the $5,000 cash distribution alone, but also spoke at length on tax cuts, border security, controlling rising inflation, and foreign trade policy. Describing his two years in office as the most successful in American history, he urged voters, saying that even though his name would not appear on the ballot paper in this election, they should consider him to be the one contesting, and vote for Republicans accordingly.

Analysts believe that Trump made this promise in an effort to win over voters, given the stiff competition the Republicans are expected to face from the Democrats in the November elections. While Trump has previously introduced schemes such as the “Warrior Dividend” for army soldiers and “Trump Accounts” for children, this marks the first time in American history that a president has promised such a large, direct cash transfer to every citizen in the country. Opposition Democrats, however, have strongly criticised the move, describing it as a vote-catching gimmick and an empty promise.
