Tensions between the United States and Iran have flared once again over the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump warned that if Oman’s mediation obstructed the path Washington is pursuing, there would be serious consequences, making clear he would not hesitate to take military action if necessary. His remarks, made in response to a question about the ongoing talks between Iran and Oman aimed at ensuring safe commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, have sparked international alarm. Speaking to Fox News in a phone interview, Trump said bluntly, “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the s*** out of them.”

Trump has recently demanded that Iran surrender immediately and “raise the white flag.” He said he was in no hurry regarding military action and that the US was prepared to keep up the pressure. He noted that the US has so far used only a small fraction of its military resources in West Asia, with vast reserves of weaponry still available. He also criticized former President Joe Biden, alleging that the transfer of advanced weapons systems to Ukraine had left West Asia short of the air defense systems it needed.

The Strait of Hormuz, meanwhile, is the critical maritime chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, and plays a vital role in global energy transport. Any instability there carries serious consequences for global markets and world trade. Against this backdrop, Iran and Oman have been holding talks aimed at safeguarding the sovereignty of both coastal nations while ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels through the strait.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has cited several reasons for the slow pace of these talks, attributing the delay to the complexity of designing a new navigation framework, the number of parties involved, and efforts by certain actors to stoke further instability. Iran has alleged that unlawful US military actions are the primary cause of the insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz. With the 60-day US-Iran memorandum of understanding reached in June having now expired, relations between Washington and Tehran appear poised to deteriorate further.
