If you think today’s generation of girls is limited to reels, fashion, social media, and selfies, think again! “Gen-Z” girls have taken a completely different path. Rejecting outdated thinking and the restrictions imposed by society, they are carving out their own identity. They are shattering, through their quick thinking and boldness, the accusations society has long leveled at them — that they are careless and constantly glued to their phones.

The courage shown by this generation of girls during the recent student movement surrounding the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, which caused a nationwide stir, has surprised everyone. They made clear that they were not confined to social media posts behind the scenes, and were unafraid to come out onto the streets directly to question authority, whatever the issue. Baton blows, police arrests, water cannons, and tear gas — none of these could shake their resolve.

The conduct of these girls during the struggle drew significant attention. Undeterred by scorching heat, rain, hunger, or thirst, they sat through hours of protest. Even as they demonstrated for their rights on one hand, on the other they displayed humanity by providing food and water to fellow students and protesters. They also voluntarily cleaned up areas affected by unrest or clashes, standing as responsible citizens.

At a time when society still views women as “delicate and helpless,” these girls have proven that they do not need to depend on anyone else for their own protection. They stood as human shields, offering their backs to police batons to protect fellow protesters. Incidents of them single-handedly blocking police vehicles stand as testimony to the courage surging through this generation.

A key incident reflecting this extraordinary boldness of Gen-Z girls took place near Shivaji Park in Mumbai. As police were loading protesting students, demonstrating against the NEET paper leak, into a van for removal, the courage shown by a young woman named Rhea Ahir drew nationwide attention. Rhea is not affiliated with any political party or student organization; she is a model, actress, and entrepreneur who runs a clothing brand called “RheaShot.”

Even so, undeterred by the pouring rain, she stood in front of the police van for nearly 45 minutes, refusing to let it move forward. She confronted the police, demanding to know where the students were being taken without proper orders or prior notice. Believing that once an FIR was registered, the students’ futures would be ruined, she refused to move from in front of the van until police released them safely.

Speaking about the incident, Rhea said, “In that moment, I had no time to think. Those in the police van were our students. The only thing driving me was the fear that if a case were filed against those peacefully protesting, their futures would be destroyed. I looked brave on the outside, but inside I was trembling with fear — yet my fear felt small compared to the students’ futures.”

This generation of girls is ushering in numerous changes within society. They are using digital platforms not just for entertainment, but to raise social awareness and rally support for students’ rights. While spreading information about the movement on social media, they are also planning for peaceful protests to be carried out on the ground.

Their fighting spirit has left women of all generations, as well as elders in society, astonished. This generation of girls has completely rejected old notions that women should confine themselves within four walls, stay silent, and avoid conflict. They have made clear that they are second to none when it comes to raising their voice for their rights and for justice.

Overall, recent events make clear that all the negative perceptions held about Gen-Z girls are merely misconceptions. They are creating new milestones in responding responsibly to challenges, standing by others, and taking the lead for the greater good of society. Indeed, this generation of girls is different — and their courage is what sets them apart!
