Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao, a prominent figure in Telangana politics and widely regarded as a youth icon, is set to turn 50 on July 24, 2026, marking two decades in public life. He is known for his ability to address international audiences fluently in English while also connecting with local voters in the Telangana dialect.
Born on July 24, 1976, into the family of Telangana movement leader K. Chandrashekar Rao, KTR — despite his political lineage — pursued an independent academic path. He completed his schooling in Nizamabad and Karimnagar, his intermediate education at Vignan College in Guntur, and his degree at Nizam College, Hyderabad. He later completed an MSc in Biotechnology at the University of Pune before moving to the United States, where he earned an MBA in Marketing and E-Commerce from the City University of New York. Rather than relying on his family background, he sought employment independently, working as a project manager at the IT firm INTEC for approximately three to four years and gaining direct experience in the corporate sector.
In 2006, amid the height of the Telangana statehood movement, KTR left behind his career and lifestyle in the United States to return home and join the movement led by his father. He subsequently took on a significant role in Telangana’s political landscape, including resigning from his position as MLA in 2010 in support of the statehood cause. He was first elected MLA from Sircilla in 2009 and has since retained the seat in five consecutive elections without defeat, while also weathering various political and legal challenges over the years.
Following the formation of Telangana in 2014, KTR gained substantial administrative experience during a decade as a state minister, during which he oversaw the departments of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Mines and Geology, and Information Technology and Industries. He is credited with transforming the state’s IT sector, notably establishing T-Hub as one of the world’s largest startup innovation hubs, attracting major global companies to Hyderabad, and introducing single-window clearance systems such as TS-iPASS to boost industrial investment.
As Working President of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), KTR has played a central role in rebuilding the party following setbacks in the 2023 assembly elections and the 2024 parliamentary elections, in which the party failed to win a single seat. Amid defections and public criticism questioning the party’s viability, KTR assumed a more active leadership role, engaging directly with public concerns and maintaining a strong presence on social media to help revive the party’s standing, including a notable performance in subsequent local body elections.
Marking his 50th birthday, KTR announced he would personally fund the higher education expenses of 50 underprivileged students. He also chose to forgo personal celebrations, instead expressing solidarity with protesters injured during demonstrations in Delhi over examination paper leaks by attending a related demonstration in Hyderabad.
